🔍 Synopsis

Deep Rising is set on the cruise liner Argonautica, where a group of mercenaries is scheming to rob the rich passengers. When they step on board, however, the ship is suspiciously empty, with only traces of a horrific slaughter.

The primary horrifying fact is that the mercenaries will soon learn about the gigantic deep-sea creature and its tentacled babies that are onboard the ship and had devoured the other passengers. While these mercenaries struggle to escape, they will soon realize that the deep-sea entity’s continuous assault has rendered few to no survivors.

💡 Personal Insights

Deep Rising is certainly an amusing action horror movie, especially for creature feature lovers, since it contains great humor along with horror. With fabulous 90’s action and a combination of Aliens and Pirates of the Caribbean, Williams captivates the audience gloriously. He brings humor with his sarcastic tongue in cheek wit along with action hero charisma, which makes him a solid actor for the lead role.

The design of the creature, which is as laughable as it is terrifying and with the great tentacles, sphered out and devoured everything makes it one of the films best elements. Although the practical effects do impress with the CGI, it surpass popularly for it’s imprint as the movie’s eyesore. Due to the awe inspiring iconic wonders of the film, loved 90’s B-movie fan, proves their cult fuage.

Even though Deep Rising, excelled remotely far past expectations, as it struggled terribly at the box office, it is still a great iconic wonder due to the unique non stop action. In modern days however it proves to become a love for fans of the campy charm filled marvel.

🌍 Cultural Significance

Originally, Stephen Sommers wanted to use this film as a pretext for a King Kong crossover by revealing a mysterious island at the end of the film. Unfortunately, these plans were scrapped due to failure of Deep Rising.

The Mummy (1999) Influence: Deep Rising featured many cast members, and some of the humor from it was also incorporated into Sommers’ big hit, The Mummy, so the crossover was rather effortless.

The film is an early example of the mixed genre of high-seas action and Lovecraftian horror and it, unlike the more modern movies Underwater (2020) and Ghost Ship (2002), is set on a boat which makes it a rather unique film from that time period.
