Personal Insights
Dirty Games tries to take a stab at the voyeuristic entertainment’s dark underbelly, imagined as a shallow cross of Black Mirror and Love Island. A public-controlled erotic “game” serves as the captivation. However, the idea feels poorly executed as it features a handful of undercooked characters and stilted acting that turn the built-up psychological tension into soft-core voyeuristic spectacle.
With that in mind, the film may serve as a guilty pleasure for those interested in cinema centered around scandalous themes. There’s a strange fascination in witnessing to what length the characters will go to endure the game before they attempt to defy it.
Cultural Significance
Dirty Games, at least in concept, doesn’t seem to have high artistic aspirations. Rather, it showcases how modern technology allows for the exploitation of interactivity and surveillance. It utilizes reality TV tropes on purpose, but critics argue it doesn’t have the skill to comment on them.
