Bollywood’s Wild Day: Breaking Down the Three Big Trailers Released on January 5th

January 5, 2025, will go down as a significant day for Bollywood trailer drops, with three major releases creating a stir. The day was packed with excitement and speculation, offering a glimpse into Bollywood’s future offerings. Here’s a breakdown of the trailers that dropped — and what they tell us about the state of the industry.

1. Sky Force: A Fighter Redux?

Selling by Mad Films has been strong majorly because they have always kept on introducing quirky content and in their new movie M and 2, exactly that is being confirmed. However, even with the success of the franchise, it seems like they are going on a backward trend with their upcoming project Sky Force as it seems too mainstream.

Fighter (2024) seems to be the perfect comparison for Sky Force, much like the M And 2 movies, the Indo-Pak war concept matches perfectly with the plot of blowing sky base air forces. For a movie of this scale, having a similar plot is a bit disappointing specially with Akshay Kumar casting as a pilot, even though the introduction teasing a pariah is interesting, the concept does seem stale.

And as always, roaring patriotic dialogue are the norm for these movies, which much like the original Fighter, wouldn’t we wouldn’t really mind given the scale of the storytelling and the CGI. As unfortunate as it is, the bar for these movies set extremely low, but what is troubling is how one would expect these movies to do well without following cliche techniques, using catchphrases such as: Hindustan Zindabad etc; while at first seemed a new and thrilling concept to me, it all just feels too overdone now. So while there is hope of a microwave Maida made into something great, the odds do seem bleak and unorthodox.

2. Daa: Shahid Kapoor’s Most Challenging Role Yet?

The second trailer that sparked some controversy was Daa, which stars Shahid Kapoor in a film directed by Rosshan Andrrews. The buzz around the film suggests that Daa is a remake of the Malayalam film Mumbai Police (2013), which revolves around the subject of psychological thriller with its interesting story and good twist elements in it. But Shahid has denied those claims and maintaining that the movie is completely original.

The Daa teaser is dark and chaotic, with a twitchy Shahid in a role of a cop. The knife attack and wild dancing sequences hint a character reminiscent of someone who is mad yet clever. And the Daa teaser’s background score aptly composed by Jake Bejoy helps set a dark and violent theme to the film.

To agree with the point Daa does appear to have taken inspiration from mumbai police but them remaking it for a Hindi audience does give a benefit of new audience cats coming in. The question is tho, will the film be too adherent to the original version or will it portray new ideas not shown in the original version. There is hope from Shahid’s side due to his portrayal of useless cop which he has naild very well.

The intensity and real feeling contained within the story is brought closer through the songs of the film, which Vishal Mishra happens to be the one who composed with an exceptional flair. This is especially intriguing when you take into account his portrayal of such intense characters as Haider and Kabir Singh, which already are heavyweights in their own. Shahid himself has gone on record to call Daa his most difficult role to achieve.

3. Badass Ravi Kumar: Himesh Reshammiya’s Self-Aware Masterstroke

The most interesting movie, I guess, is Himesh Reshammiya’s Badass Ravi Kumar. The actor seems to have believed in himself, hoping to make a mark in the Bollywood film industry, which quite honestly is rather surprising, its releasing seems to be turning the tables when it comes to its absurdacs. What’s impressive is that it has self-awareness.To get straight to the point, Himesh’s chainsaw wielding dancing ninja masks, all clad with wigs is something of a gold standard of a meme.

One could say the movie seems to be a conscious, unapologetic send-up of the formulaic Bollywood action flick, and Himesh is selling his meme status like a champion. The menacing visuals coupled with cringe-worthy dialogues, combined with insane action sequences seem to be intentional, so we are left with two options. I find it utterly absurd and comical during moments where the ‘HimTap’ aka shirtless Himesh sings ‘Tandoori Nights,’ gaining the spotlight while zooming across the buildings on a zip line, dancing around the villains with chainsaws in his hand.

His self awareness is what seems to enhance Ravi Kumar, Badass. In Himesh’s past attempts to bring life to serious characters seem to have not gone well, he was ridiculed. Now the man is attempting to lean into the meme status he’s attained, that seems to be an alteration of few sorts. Himesh is marketing his imagined flaws, making them into a thumbs-up .

The list of the cast includes unexpected persons such as Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra and Prashant Narayanan which adds some dose of nostalgia and ridiculous charm. Even Sunny Leone shows up for a ‘guest’ appearance to gyrate with Himesh in the desert; the trailer has already been viewed by almost 45 million viewers, suggesting that the audiences are not adverse to this strange offering.

Badass Ravi Kumar has the ability to be a cult movie. If the viewers accept this bollywood romp which mercilessly mocks itself then we can expect more such unconventional bollywood films in the future.

A Hopeful Outlook for Bollywood in 2025

While there continues to be issues regarding the use of old clichés and trite narratives like Sky Force, there is Raptor and Daa, which showcase some creativity. After an underwhelming 2024, Bollywood hulk movies trailers appear to tease a much better year ahead.

It seems that self-aware cringe has become the go-to approach this year, an approach Himesh Reshammiya has adopted seamlessly. Shahid Kapoor is unwilling to rest on his past laurels and that is something that can be seen in his willingness to push boundaries in new characters. Then again if Sky Force is able to deliver something completely different then there’s still hope.

As we move towards 2025 we can see Bollywood it in a unique position. The industry needs to find a mix of orthodox storytelling with modern slants so they don’t loose their audience. Patriotic, Psychological drama or excessive self parody, it doesn’t matter, one thing is for certain, Bollywood is set for an exciting year.
