Ratings and Reception: ⭐

IMDb: 6.2/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 26% (Critics), 40% (Audience)

The film received criticism, especially concerning its found-footage video style and over-reliance on jump-scaring. Regarded very highly, however, was its terrifying tone and subtler elements of the film. There is a specific segment in the show which is dedicated to psychological horror, so that makes it thrilling for the audience who are used to viewing the very different conception of hell as a real parody of hellish and satanic spectacles.

Personal Insights: πŸŽ₯

The movie is amazing as it intertwines horror with history and mythology which is not common in the genre. With the Paris catacombs, one has to wonder whether horrors can get more realistic, spawning something sinister and suffocating the characters within the depths. Additionally, the whole concept of Dante’s inferno is taken very liberally, where the characters metaphorically and literally go deeper down into their own versions of hellish strife.

To experience the terrifying sounds of the tunnels, the film should be watched in a dimly lit room with good speakers. Anyone who enjoyed The Descent (2005) or Grave Encounters (2011) will cherish this movie.

πŸ’Ž Lucid Overview

As Above, So Below received lukewarm response from the audiences, however, over the years it has garnered a specific fanbase. The movie portrays guilt, redemption, and the afterlife and seems to enhance them using alchemy along with esoteric philosophies. The very catacombs themselves are an historic marvel and amplify the movie’s bone chilling authenticity.

It also stands among the other diverse found-footage horror movies that do not limit themselves to the haunted house or documentaries but rather providing a style that is immensely claustrophobic and disturbing.

πŸ“Œ Closing Notes

This is the perfect choice for those who enjoy deeply unnerving cinematic experiences that intertwine with history, and do not find obtrusive camera-work an issue. As Above, So Below is unnerving in almost every way, all the whilst containing several interesting themes perfect for those who enjoy a challenge.
