Finding 'Ohana
A Captivating Family Exploration with a Hawaiian Touch
Finding ‘Ohana (2021), directed by Jude Weng, is a family adventure treasure film that spectacularly brings together gold hunting, Hawaiian stories, and family values into one beautiful narrative. This Netflix original is a treasure on its own that reminds one of Indiana Jones and The Goonies (1985) as it provides an exciting ride through Hawaii. It has action, humor, and piece of emotion all mixed into one.
From a basic standpoint, Finding ‘Ohana is not just a story of treasure hunting, but also serves as a positive narration of a cultural tale revealing one of the strongest counterarguments about modern-day civilization losing touch with its values and that is: every family’s greatest treasure is the unconditional love and their shared story.
Plot Summary
The film portrays pili (Kea Peahu), a twelve-year-old girl who is passionate about geocaching, and her older brother Ioane “E” (A Aiono) as they make a trip to Oahu, Hawaii with their mother Leilani (Kelly Hu) during summer. The trip has the makings of an idyllic summer vacation, but the family has to care for grandfather Kimo (Branscombe Richmond) in his old age.
While going through her grandfather’s belongings, Pili, a bold and energetic individual, comes across a pirate journal which sparks her interest. The journal suggests Captain James Cook left a Hawaiian treasure during his voyage, and connecting the dots brings Pili unparalleled excitement. Eager to uncover a mysterious story, Pili sets off with her new companions Casper (Owen Vaccaro) and Hana (Lindsay Watson) on a treasure adventure through the jungles of Hawaii.
The group make their way through the jungles of Hawaii with the intention of understanding forgotten Hawaiian history, as well as uncovering hidden secrets. The race against time is diverting, as it requires Imae Ioane’s assistance, who needs to reconnect with his Hawaiian ancestry.
The challenge increases with the depth of the jungles, and time continues to ebb, meaning the siblings must merge together in belief of family, ‘Ohana’, for them to make it out alive.

Themes and Symbols
‘Ohana (Family) as the True Treasure
In Hawaiian, the word ‘Ohana means family; in context, it is more inclusive as it covers relatives, friends, and even the community. The film’s central message is that while physical treasures can be misplaced, family connections and cultural associations are beyond monetary value.
Cultural Identity and Heritage
Pili and Ioane are portrayed at the beginning of the film as the passive players of their culture, but they later go through a rediscovery of their cultural roots. The treasure quest, in this case, is symbolic of a mini journey of self-discovery that aims to reconnect an individual with their Hawaiian heritage.
The Power of Storytelling and Legacy
Kimo’s treasure map along with different legends and stories told by him showcase the preservation of a culture, or history through storytelling. Finding ‘Ohana endorses the idea that one’s past is crucial to comprehend in order to progress into the future.
Respect for Nature and Sacred Lands
The film serves to promote respect for the ‘āina as an essential asset to the Hawaiian culture. In more subtle ways, the film reminds its audience of the need to protect their environment. The treasure isn’t only about gold, but rather it is about greatly appreciating the land they travel through as well.
Adventure and Comedy Elements
Exciting Treasure Hunt – People who enjoy adventure movies will enjoy the thrilling treasure hunt with hidden rooms, secret passageways, and treasure-filled Tiki statues, and sets in the style of The Goonies and Indiana Jones.
Hawaiian Myths and Legends – The film uses Huam’s treasures’ folklore which adds mystery and depth to the treasure hunt.
Lighthearted Comedy – Casper’s quirky character, along with Ioane’s Brooklynian slang, provides plenty of comic relief to balance the action.
Dynamic Action Sequences – The film’s exciting energy comes from its cliffhanger moments including escaping collapsing tunnels to climbing mountains, charismatically blended with the film’s heartwarming elements.
Visual and Technical Craftsmanship
Cinematography & Setting
Hawaii’s breathtaking nature is the most central and eye catching aspect of the film. The lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and even the underground caves immerse the viewers in the stunning beauty of the island.
Authentic Representation
Considering other Hollywood productions, ‘Finding “Ohana” is one of the few that truly attempts to honor the Hawaiian culture. The use of the Hawaiian language, traditions, and even real historical topics add authenticity and depth to the film.
