π My Thoughts
While Insidious seems to be just another haunted house movie at first glance, in reality, it is something different altogether. James Wan flawlessly builds up tension without the need for bloodshed, involving harsh sound effects and uncomfortable camera angles supported with a really terrifying background score by Joseph Bishara, who also plays the red-faced demon.
The Further and astral projection add a new kind of spin to the concept of horror. Lin Shaye’s performance as Elise lends humanity and fundamental insight into the core theme of the film.
π For The Culture
This movie is one that began the smash success that followed James Wan’s career, and at the same time the one that revived supernatural horror in the 2010s. It is also the title that started the trend for sequels and prequels, having Insidious 2: Chapter 2 (2013), Chapter 3 (2015), The Last Key (2018), and The Red Door (2023).
Insidious helped bring back low budget horror films, showing that good scares do not require much money, only great direction and storytelling.
