1. Ready or Not (2019)
It’s one of those horror movies with dark, somewhat haunted castles, human-faced monsters out for blood, innocent girl chased by malevolent forces, lots of blood, etc. As classic and horror-filled as it gets. Despite the usual and classic setup, Ready or Not manages to deliver all those horror thrills, chills, and goosebumps. Because it’s more than just a light horror flick, it takes a subversive approach. So, there we have social critique presented through a horror movie Who would have thought…
The film is a kind of revenge on the wealthy social class. It’s a life-and-death struggle between the have-nots and the rich, generationally wealthy, with all their rituals and fixed ideas, but it’s also a dark comedy. Available on Disney+ Romania.
2. Joy (2015): Must-Watch Movies On Disney+
If you like Jennifer Lawrence and enjoyed Silver Linings Playbook, then you must see Joy, directed by the same director, who had Jennifer Lawrence as his muse for three productions: Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Joy. Considered the most successful actress of her generation, Jennifer Lawrence has an undeniable originality in her style that director David O. Russell tries to highlight.
In this dramedy, she’s a young divorced mother, facing personal bankruptcy. But Joy doesn’t give up and transforms into an inventor and entrepreneur, despite all odds. The film is narrated in parts in the style of great Russian family dramas, giving it a unique touch. Moreover, it’s inspired by true events.
You can watch it exclusively on Disney Plus.
3. Favorita (2018)
One of the best movies on Disney+ in Romania, The Favourite falls into the period drama and social critique category but can easily be seen as a dark comedy too. The film is one of the finest releases in the past five years, excelling in its screenplay, direction, cinematography, and originality of the subject.
We still see too few women leading the main storylines in the movies they appear in. In The Favourite, we have 3 ladies in a love triangle inspired by real events. In the 18th-century, Queen Anne of England, with fragile health, is manipulated by two women who desire to rule the country, controlling the queen. The witty dialogue and fresh performances by Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Colman recommend it for a thoughtful watch to fully enjoy the experience. You can watch it on Disney Plus.
4. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a comedy and drama that delves into multiple themes such as war, fascism, nostalgia, friendship, and loyalty. Ralph Fiennes, as Monsieur Gustave H., the manager of a mountain resort in the Republic of Zubrowka, is accused of murdering a wealthy guest (Tilda Swinton). As a victim of a setup, he and his protégé Zero (Tony Revolori) search for exoneration.
In essence, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is a production about the masks we put on to fit our aspirations and the cost we pay for keeping up appearances. “Certainly the illusion has been maintained with remarkable grace,” admirably remarks one character about another near the end of the film. These ideas are conveyed through meticulously composed and choreographed shots, with precise and restrained camera movements. Along with its delightful color scheme, the film achieves a balanced elegance akin to the humor in each scene.
5. The Shape of Water (2017)
A love story in the vein of Beauty and the Beast, The Shape of Water is one of those heart-touching films that stay with you for a long time. You might not have watched it because fantasy films don’t particularly interest you, or maybe director Guillermo del Toro hasn’t convinced you lately. Whatever the case, don’t let this magical gem slip away.
She is mute and works a menial job at a research center. He is a humanoid amphibious creature brought from somewhere in the Amazon for study. As improbable as it sounds, the two find common ground to explore gestures of tenderness, kindness, delicacy, attention to each other’s needs, and empathy. She, often invisible to others, is seen at her most beautiful by this “creature,” and the creature looks beyond his terrifying appearance, sensing his sensitivity and need for protection.
The Shape of Water won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
6. 500 Days Of Summer (2009)
The film (500) Days of Summer seems to be a story about two lovers destined to be together until deep old age, at least that’s how Tom (Jason Gordon-Lewitt) sees his relationship with Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Although, it must be said, she doesn’t seem to agree. (500) Days of Summer is a love story that ends beautifully, without meaning a happy ending for the two protagonists. One of the best Disney Plus films of the drama genre.
7. Alien – When SF Meets Horror
Considered one of the best SF-horror movies of all time. In Alien, Lieutenant Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, and the crew of the spaceship Nostromo fight for survival after encountering an extraterrestrial monster. A creature with two rows of teeth that has remained firmly rooted in the cinephile imagination for over 30 years.
The series began in 1979 with the film directed by Ridley Scott, followed by three other films, directed by James Cameron in 1986, David Fincher in 1992, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet in 1997. Actress Sigourney Weaver is the guiding thread of the series, playing the role of Lieutenant Ellen Ripley. But no sequel has lived up to the height of the first film in the series. You can see all the movies in the series on Disney Plus Romania.
8. Prometheus (2012)
At the age of 74, Ridley Scott attempted to recreate the glory of Alien. Ridley Scott’s science-fiction film, Prometheus, is a 3D prequel to the first film in the Alien series, also directed by Scott. It’s a sci-fi, horror, and action film that also explores some philosophical questions. Prometheus is worth seeing if you’re eager for cinematic escapism, thrills, and cinephile entertainment. Prometheus has a grandiosity that suits it very well; its set design has cosmic dimensions, and the special effects are impressively beautiful. The grandiose aspect comes from the film having some aristocracy and elegance, reminiscent of classic cinema, with aesthetics and stakes set higher than those of blockbusters in recent years.
Regarding Ridley Scott’s intention, as there’s always a difference between intention and result, Prometheus has ended up developing a different concept from Alien, but the story still unfolds in the same universe. The action takes place in the 21st century and follows the crew of the spaceship Prometheus in their exploration of an extraterrestrial civilization. When Ridley Scott announced a prequel, many wanted a thriller as frightening as Alien, where the crew members sent into space would find themselves claustrophobic, trapped on a spaceship on a planet with an unbreathable atmosphere, hunted and terrorized by extraterrestrials. And you can’t say that Prometheus doesn’t deliver plenty of fear and horror (thank goodness!).
9. Moulin Rouge! (2001): Must-Watch Movies On Disney+
Penultimate recommendation from the list of Disney+ movies available in Romania is the musical Moulin Rouge! Directed by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! is considered one of the best of the 2000s. The action takes place in romantic Paris and revolves around a love story. He, a poor writer, she, named Satine, a courtesan, and the star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret.
But their love is a secret, stalked by the third player in the story, a wealthy duke who pursues Satine. The tensions of this love triangle are often expressed through extraordinary melodies. This period film has an aesthetic and pace similar to The Great Gatsby, so if you liked The Great Gatsby, try Moulin Rouge! And vice versa. She’s played by Nicole Kidman, and he’s portrayed by Ewan McGregor. Available on Disney+.
10. Mary Poppins
We conclude our article with must-watch Disney Plus movies, including one of the most beautiful films ever made, which we could only see at the Cinematheque The truth is that we always expect to find a touch of magic in any movie. We start a film in search of a less rational, unpredictable, and limitless world. We desire 2 hours of hocus-pocus, where illusion becomes stronger than reality. After all, great actors are nothing more than wizards who make you forget their true identity and previous roles. And Mary Poppins accomplishes this magic brilliantly.
We could all use a good magical umbrella against the rains and boring days. Mary Poppins, with Julie Andrews in the lead role, is one of those movies you can’t watch if you don’t believe in magic even a little. In Mary Poppins, you’ll be enchanted by a colorful world where no one stops you from wandering aimlessly through an animated world, and every problem can be solved with a song.”
